Shivam, skeleton is a protection to the soft tissues, muscles, tendons and the rest of the body. It is made of bones and joints. The skeletal system provides attachment points for muscles thereby allowing the movement at the joints. The red marrow inside the bone produces new blood cells. An adult body skeletal system is made up of 206 individual bones. These bones can be arranged into Axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton. Without the skeleton system, the body is just like a sponge which has absorbed water. It would have neither a frame nor a structure. The axial skeleton is made up of 80 bones covering the skull, hyoid, auditory ossicles, ribs, sternum and the vertebral column. The upper and lower limbs, pelvic girdle and the shoulder girdle constitute the appendicular skeleton and this is made up of 126 bones. Though the bone itself is a structure, they are of 5 types. Long bones, Short bones, Flat bones, Irregular bones and the sesamoid bones. The bones help in protecting the organs like heart, lungs from damage caused by external forces. They help in movement of joints. The skeletal system also stores quite a few different types of essential substances which facilitate growth and repair of the body.
