On September 4th, 1978, Anna University was founded as a unitary type of university. The late Dr. C. N. Annadurai, a former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, inspired the naming of this university. It provides advanced training in engineering, technology, architecture, and applied sciences that is pertinent to the society's present and future demands. It encourages collaboration between the academic and industry communities in addition to advancing research and distributing knowledge obtained therefrom.
Four renowned technical institutions in the city of Madras (now Chennai) were combined and integrated to form the university.

Engineering College (CEG) (Established in 1794)
Technology College Alagappa (ACT) (Established in 1944)
MIT, the Madras Institute of Technology (Established in 1949)
Planning & Architecture School (SAP) (Established in 1957)
