What is the difference between biomedical engineering and bio-engineering ?Which is better ? and relatd colleges?
Hello Anubhabh,
So as the terms suggest bioengineering is basically a broader field with various sub-disciplines whereas biomedical engineering is confined to engineering for healthcare solutions.
Of course there is certain degree of overlap but let me give you a few examples of what kind of work would come under which
• Developing a new strain of bacteria that can say decompose plastics, biomimocry for developing more efficient models such as the discovery of velcro, the CRISPR technology if you may have heard of it basically a gene editing tool which can help us make recombinant DNA all comes under the umbrella of bioengineering
• Making biocompatible prostheses and tissue grafts, a newer less invasive model for tissue biopsy, synthesising recombinant proteins like Insulin developed by Eli-Lily.
Basically all designs involved in diagnosis and treatment of patients is part of bio-medical engineering.
Today Artificial Intelligence has also come to play a great role in Biomed engineering where softwares are being developed to correctly read and identify biopsy slides, CT scans etc
Both have great scope and as I said earlier there is a great degree of overlap and one can pursue a career in biomed engineering after doing bioengineering as well.
They are both great fields with a huge scope for R&D
Here is a list of the top institutions for biomed engineering in India:
1. AIIMS, Delhi
2. IIT Delhi
3. IIT, Bombay
4. MIT, Manipal main campus
5. IIT Roorkee
I hope this was helpful, good luck ️
