Engineering aspirants who are looking forward to a great future after passing their degree course from IITs, NITs and other reputed colleges, need to be cognizant of some major differences between JEE Mains and Advanced exam. JEE is one of the reputed and tough engineering entrance exams and it is conducted to fill the seats of IITs, NITs and other technical institutes. Candidates are required to give JEE and get a top score for getting admission into best institutes and pursuing undergraduate courses. It is important for them to clear both JEE Mains and Advanced to get admission into IITs. Candidates can write JEE for pursuing B.E/ B. Tech courses or B. Arch/B. Planning courses from India’s top technical institutes.

Let’s see some of the major differences between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced,

While, CBSE(Central Board of Secondary Education) conducts the Mains Exam, JEE Advanced is generally conducted by any one of the IITs

There is also a slight change in the syllabus of both JEE Mains and Advanced

The eligibility criteria for both the exams differ. While the JEE Mains can be given by any eligible candidate, JEE Advanced can be given only by the top rankers, who clear JEE Mains and get a cut- off score

Candidates can study BE or BTech only in NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes and other technical institutes after clearing JEE Mains but they are eligible to pursue BE/ BTech in IITs and ISM Dhanbad once they clear JEE Advanced

The JEE Mains comprises of two papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2. The former paper is for those students, who want to pursue BE/ BTech and latter is for students looking to study B. Arch/ B. Planning. Students can take the paper 1 exam via online mode or offline mode but the paper 2 can be taken only via offline mode. Candidates have to specify their choice of exam while applying for JEE

JEE Advanced comprises of two papers- Paper 1 and 2. Candidates have to give both the papers in order to be eligible for admissions into ISM and any of the IITs. Both the papers comprise of all three subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with equal weightage of marks. The candidates are selected into IITs according to the ranks they get in JEE Advanced

JEE Mains can be given for three consecutive years if you have failed to clear in previous attempts. JEE Advanced can be given only for two consecutive years

JEE Main makes you eligible to give JEE Advanced and JEE Advanced makes you eligible for admissions into IITs

These are some of the important differences between the two exams that should be known before you attempt these exams. Both have their own difficulty level and you have to prepare in the best possible way to clear those exams and get top rank to pursue engineering in one of the IITs. I hope now you have more clarity on JEE Mains and Advanced and you are ready to prepare accordingly.
