What is the exam pattern and marking scheme in JAM 2021? Please explain me in details like how many questions carries how much marks?

Hello there,
IIT JAM 2021 will have 60 questions in total. There are 3 sections- section A, section B and section C with 30, 10 and 20 questions respectively. Section A and B are MCQs while in Section C you will not be provided with any options.

The marking scheme is as follows:
For Section A: 10 questions will carry 1 mark each. 1/3 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer. The remaining 20 questions of this section will carry 2 marks. 2/3 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.

For Section B: 2 marks for every question. No negative marking.

For Section C: 10 questions will carry 1 mark, and remaining 10 questions will carry 2 marks. No negative marking.

Hi Aspirant,

IISc Bangalore released the JAM 2021 exam pattern along with the JAM brochure already on August 12, 2020. The IIT JAM 2021 exam is scheduled to be conducted online as a computer-based test (CBT) by IISc Bangalore. Applicants are informed that JAM 2021 will be conducted for seven subjects as opposed to six subjects for which the examination was carried out last year.

The JAM Economics Subject Exam has been added to the list since this year. The seven test papers for which IIT JAM 2021 is to be carried out are listed below, along with their codes:

Mathematical Statistic (MS), Mathematics (MA), Physics (PH), Economics (EN), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG) , Biotechnology (BT)

Exam Date: 14 February 2021

  • Session-I: 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM Biotechnology (BT), Physics (PH) and Mathematical Statistics (MS)
  • Session-II: 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM Chemistry (CY), Economics (EN), Geology (GG) and Mathematics (MA)
  • Exam Mode: Online, Computer Based Test (CBT)
  • Exam Duration: 3 hours
  • Test Language: English
  • Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT)
  • Subjects: Biotechnology (BL), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Economics (EN), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH)
  • Total number of Questions: 60
  • Total Marks: 100 marks

Question pattern-wise distribution:

  • Section: A : Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): E ach question has four choices with one correct answer: 30 questions
  • Section: B : Multiple Select Questions (MSQs): Each question has four choices with one or more correct answers: 10 questions
  • Section C: Numerical Answer Type (NAT): The answer to each question is a signed real number that needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor. No choices will be shown for these questions: 20 questions

Total no. of questions: 60

Candidates are informed that there is negative marking in IIT JAM 2021 . Marks in each section of the exam would be deducted as per the scheme mentioned below.

  • Section A : For each wrong answer to one mark questions, 1/3 mark will be deducted. On the other hand, for each wrong answer to two marks questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted. There is no negative marking for any question left unanswered.
  • Section B : There is no negative marking in this section. Also, there is no partial marking provision in this section.
  • Section C : There is no negative marking in this section, as well.

Section-wise:

  • Section A includes 10 MCQs carries 1 mark each and 20 MCQs carry 2 marks each.
  • Section B includes 10 MSQs carries 2 marks each
  • Section C includes 10 NAT Questions that carry 1 mark each and 10 NAT Questions carry 2 marks each.
