After CAT exam you will need to apply for all the colleges in which you are interested to take admission except IIMs (As this exam is especially conducted by IIMs and the IIMs in which you are interested you already select them while filling up the form). Some of the college forms are even filled before CAT exam or result like FMS Delhi, SP Jain etc. but most of the forms application time open after the CAT result so keep checking the deadline of colleges in which you are interested.
After the CAT exam result, all the colleges in which you have applied including IIMs makes a merit list to call students for the second round of interview, GD and WAT which is made in the basis of your aggregate score and which is based on different parameters such as CAT marks, 10th, 12th and graduation percentage, work experience, engineer or non-engineer, gender etc. whose weightage vary according to different colleges.
Then after you go through the second round of interview and WAT another merit list is made on the basis of the new aggregate score which also consists of the interview, GD and WAT marks. Generally, in this aggregate score interview and CAT marks have the highest weightage.
Now, this final merit list is used to call top no. of students according to no. of seats available for admission and the rest of students are allotted the waiting number according to their rank in the merit list. As many of the students get multiple calls and they choose the best alternative for themselves which makes a seat empty in other colleges. These seats are filled up by pushing the waiting list number from 1 to the number of seats empty. This process is repeated n number of times until all the seats are filled.
And then finally you will need to pay a certain fee which differs for each college in order to reserve your seat and then you get admission to pursue MBA degree!!
Hello Raushan! After appearing for CAT, as soon as the results come out, if you have cleared a particular college's cutoff you get a call from them for GD PI round and WAT. If you perform well in them you get selected and get admission in that particular college. Hope that helps.
