what is the softwares to be learnt by the civil engineer to get white color job?
Hi,
Here is the order of courses with importance for civil engineering :-
- Microsoft Office. Particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project
- AutoCAD. Some companies prefer Microstation but AutoCAD is the industry standard. Don’t forget to include the Survey, Civil Design, and Land Development packages. And definitely learn how to use the project files and features.
- HydroCAD. No matter what project you do, Stormwater Management is going to be an issue. HydroCAD seems to be the industry standard.
- Discipline-specific software. Here you can include your Revit and STAAD for structural engineers, Highway Capacity Software and Autoturn for the Traffic and Transportation Engineers.
- Primavera. This is a project management application. It can be substituted with MS Project above also MS Project.
- Microstation: Microstation is a CAD alternative to AutoCAD. While not as common as AutoCAD I’ve seen it used a lot because it’s much cheaper. I don’t believe it has as much design assistance as AutoCAD with its templates, terrains, and ability to automatically generate cross-sections based on project file data. I only mention it because I saw it a lot in my early days as an engineer. At the very least every office should have a drafter or engineer capable of converting Microstation files to AutoCAD files. When subcontractors would submit Microstation files we would then have to convert to AutoCAD and incorporate into our files. One major fault to Microstation I have found is you cannot name the different layers so when you’re zoomed in close and you need to know what a line is, the properties tab will only tell you “Layer 36” or some other random number. I found that extremely frustrating when trying to incorporate a drawing into mine then having to change all the layers for consistency.
I would recommend these courses for better jobs :-
- Revit
- AutoCAD
- Tekla
- StaadPro / Etab
- Lumion or Enscapade or Syncro is a bonus for you.
Above this, I would also suggest you to have a basic working knowledge in MS-Office or any similar, Adobe PDF editor or BlueBeam as these become utmost necessary while documenting or raising queries.
Hope this helps.
