One of the most difficult legal entrance exams in the nation, the CLAT is prescribed by the Consortium of NLUs. The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is an entrance exam for undergraduate and postgraduate law programs at National Law Universities (NLUs) in India. Below is the detailed syllabus for the UG CLAT Exam :

1. English Language

  • Topics Covered:

    • Reading Comprehension
    • Vocabulary (Synonyms, Antonyms, Contextual Word Meaning)
    • Grammar and Sentence Correction
    • Fill in the Blanks
    • Para Jumbles
    • Error Detection
  • Focus Areas:

    • Understanding main ideas and themes in passages.
    • Drawing inferences and conclusions.
    • Identifying relationships between ideas.

2. Current Affairs & General Knowledge

  • Topics Covered:

    • Recent Events of National and International Importance
    • Legal News and Developments
    • General Knowledge (History, Geography, Economics, Science)
  • Focus Areas:

    • Contemporary events (past 8-12 months before the exam).
    • Static GK related to significant legal and political events.

3. Legal Reasoning

  • Topics Covered:

    • Legal Principles and Facts
    • Application of Laws (Contracts, Torts, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law)
    • Situational Judgment
    • Legal Maxims and Terms
  • Focus Areas:

    • Understanding and applying given legal principles.
    • Analyzing facts and deriving conclusions.

4. Logical Reasoning

  • Topics Covered:

    • Critical Thinking
    • Analytical Reasoning
    • Syllogisms
    • Logical Sequences and Patterns
    • Puzzles and Arrangements
    • Statement & Assumptions/Conclusions
  • Focus Areas:

    • Identifying arguments, assumptions, and conclusions.
    • Evaluating logical consistency.

5. Quantitative Techniques

  • Topics Covered:

    • Arithmetic (Ratios, Percentages, Averages)
    • Profit & Loss
    • Time, Speed, Distance
    • Algebra and Simplifications
    • Data Interpretation (Bar Graphs, Pie Charts, Tables)
  • Focus Areas:

    • Elementary mathematics (up to Class 10 level).
    • Solving numerical problems based on graphs and tables.

Exam pattern is also mentioned below:

  1. Total Questions : 120 (MCQs)
  2. Time : 2 hours
  3. Marking Scheme :
    • +1 for each correct answer.
    • -0.25 for each incorrect answer.
