The process by which green plants prepare their food in the presence of sunlight is called photosynthesis. Photo means light and synthesis means to combine. Leaves are the food factories of plant as they prepare food for the whole plant. Leaves have green pigment called chlorophyll which helps the leaves to capture the energy of the sunlight. This energy is used to prepare food from Carbon dioxide and water and since the food synthesis process occurs in the presence of sunlight. It is called photosynthesis.
