What is your opinion on sastra university?
Hi Keerhanapraba,
Sastra University is a private college and is situated in the 3rd-tier city like Thanjavur is not really a plus-plus but by the virtue of its extraordinary infrastructure in the middle of no-where and by its heavy intake of students of various mix and interests every single year pretty much makes up for the exposure part of it. For the part that it's a private institute, It doesn't really matter unless it leaves you strapped in debt for the next 15 years to come, which I'm sure it most certainly doesn't.
Unlike other top tier colleges like IIT's/NITs whose uniqueness lies in the intense competition among students to get into the them wherein SASTRA it's the other way round, given its heavy intake there is an intense competition for everything inside right from the branch you get, internals, choice of sections/professors, desired internship/projects, placements, honors, or be it sitting in classroom, mess/canteen or doing hostel registration you will face an infinite competition in freaking everything which will unconsciously define the real you in the years to come, of course in a good way.
As the academics is concerned, SASTRA has standard courses for every branch, with fairly decent professors and it blends academic research with nitty-gritty practical skills required in a professional career.
I really appreciate SASTRA for couple of things like Open elective which lets you complete your credits in prior semesters by letting you choose cross branch subjects of choice which leaves you absolutely *free* to do a semester-long internship/final year project (7-8 months) anywhere in the world.
Talking about placements which are certainly a highlight of any graduate course in India. Everyone who went to SASTRA does unanimously believe in its immense and immaculate potential to get its students placed in the best of companies by the virtue of its extraordinary T&P department. As quoted in Wikipedia, In 2011, software company Tata Consultancy Services set a world record of recruiting 1,755 students from SASTRA, the largest recruitment by any company in the world from a single campus. Though I don't see this as any benchmark still it says something.
Thus to end with, I'd say an undergrad school is as good as what you make out it, for many who slog it enough, night-after-night sleeplessly it might turn out, who knows-maybe a diamond, for others just a piece of coal.
