Hello,

UPSC Exam is divided into three stages namely Prelims, Mains and Interview, its syllabus is humongous so you have to chalk out routine on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

In order to initiate your preparation, go through the following steps;

The first step is to be acquainted with the syllabus, take a print out and keep in your study table, go through it daily ,you'll know what to read and what to skip.

Have an integrated approach while preparing for Prelims and Mains as nowadays UPSC also frame Prelims questions based on Mains syllabus.

Reading the newspaper on a daily basis, The Hindu or The Indian Express is the best option, it'll also help in prelims as well as answer writing for Mains, you can connect any given question with current affairs if it has any relevance economically, socially, or any other way.

When it comes to books, NCERTS are the foundation, and later proceed towards others standard books as follows;

For Prelims GS Paper-I -

History ;

NCERT Class XI and XII
India's Struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra
For Indian Culture, refer art and culture by Nitin Singhania

Geography ;

NCERT Class VI to XII
GC Leong's Physical Geography
World Atlas

Economics ;

NCERT Class XI
Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh

International Relations & Polity ;

NCERT XII Political Science with current affairs
Indian Polity by Laxmikanth

Prelims Paper 2:CSAT -

Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by RS Agarwal
M Tyra's Quicker Maths

You can refer the following books for four General Studies Paper;

GS I - For History , Class XI NCERT book with India's struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra,India after Independence by Bipan Chandra,History of Medieval India by Satish Chandra

For Geography refer World Geography and Geography of India by Majid Hussain, GC Leong's Physical and Human Geography with NCERT Class XI book.

For GS II - Polity and International Relations , refer Indian Polity by Lamikanth,India's Foreign Policy by Rajiv Sikri

For GS III - For Economics refer Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh, read ARC report along with Economic Survey and Fiscal Budget.

For GS IV - For Ethics refer a book named Lexicon by Niraj Kumar, also you can go through study material of IGNOU.

Always keep resources minimal, read one book many a times instead of many a book one time, revision is the key here.

Writing Mains is huge task(writing for 250 marks in three hours), practice answer writing in advance, go through topper's answer sheet available in various UPSC preparation sites , it will give you a basic idea about answer writing, have a balanced point of view and try to provide a holistic viewpoint if possible.

Go through previous year paper available on the official website of UPSC, practice mock papers and test series to evaluate your preparation level on a regular basis.
