In order to become an IPS you have write the civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC.

To be eligible to write this examination you have to complete your graduation from a recognised college or university and your age should be between 21 to 32 years. There is a provision for age relaxation for reserved categories.

For general: 6 attempts upto 32 years

For OBC: 9 attempts upto 35 year

For SC/ST: no limit upto 37 years

The nationality of a candidate must be either of the following:

• Citizen of India
• Subject of Nepal
• Subject of Bhutan
• A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962 for permanent settlement in India.
• Migrant from any of the following countries for permanently settling in India:

Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam

First of all Know the pattern of exam, every year UPSC conducts Civil services examination for various posts including All India services and central services, IPS is one of the All India service exam conducted by UPSC.

Coming to preparation part :-

• Start by reading NCERT'S of all classes and general reading for the first time, revise 2 times and make notes now.
• Keep the syllabus of mains with you all the time and start by picking one paper and complete the syllabus topic wise.
• While doing that you should leave 30 minutes aside in a day for answer writing practice of just the topics you read on that particular day.
• Sources for those syllabus would be standard books or magazines or Internet for some topics like women empowerment, society, government schemes.
• Follow this strategy and after completing 4 papers of GS and Essay you can join in any reputated coaching institute if you find yourself uncomfortable with the preparations.
• Pick your optional subject now itself and get command over it.
• Spent sometime for your optional subject every day and practice writing for that too.
• Start writing Essays about different current events and start to analyze yourself, follow insights on India secure initiative.
• You should read budget, economic survey and selected topics on India year book.
• In the last two months concentrate only on prelims and follow current affairs magazines regularly, start revising the facts, do more than 50 test series, spend 4 hours time on one test.
• Maybe you will only get few marks in the starting but believe me after doing like 30 tests, your score will increase if you are analyzing the paper carefully after the test.
• Don't forget to read newspaper every day, don't forget to read yojana, monthly vision current affairs magazines.
• Don't go too far into making notes of every thing you will read, because there is not enough time so just underline it.

It's really good to know that you want to become an IPS OFFICER.

Eligibility for appearing for the IPS exam

• A candidate must be a citizen of India to become an IPS or IAS.
• At the time of filling the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, the candidates must be at least 21 years of age.
• The candidates must hold a degree from a recognized university in any discipline.

To become an IPS (Indian Police Services) officer, you need to clear civil service exam which is held by Union public service commission (UPSC) every year. It is a very competitive exam with more than 3,50,000 candidates taking up the examination out of which under 600–700are finally selected(IPS seats varies year to year..it's approx 50). So be prepared to work hard if you want to be selected.

Age Limit:-A candidate should be between the ages of 21 years- 32 years on 1st August. They must have been not born earlier than 2nd August, 1984 and not later than 1st August, 1995

Upper age limit:-SC/St candidates- up to 5 years relaxation OBC candidates- up to 3 years relaxation Handicapped person (blind, deaf-mute and orthopedically) – up to 10years relaxationJ&K resident, Ex- Military Servicemen- up to 5 years relaxation
