The NMMS is targeted at students who belong to the weaker section of the economy and studying between class 9 to class 12. There are no specific quotas for various categories like General or OBC. However, each state/UT is allocated the number of scholarships based on population data for students of ages between 11 and 18 years.

Annually, about 1,00,000 scholarships are awarded nationwide. General category students are eligible if they meet the income ceiling (family income should not exceed 3,50,000 per year) and achieve the required academic performance, typically scoring 55% or more in the previous exams.
