The type of study that you are doing in 12th standard depends upon the streams that you have chosen from - Science, Commerce or Arts.
Now, after 12th too, there are different options available to you according to the stream that you have chosen.
If you are a Science Student, every stream is available. You can choose later any thing that you want to pursue in life.
As a Commerce student, you cannot choose the streams of a Science student, i.e. Engineering or Medical, etc. However, you have the liberty to choose otherwise all the other available stream choices
As an Arts student, your further choices are even more limited as you can choose the careers of a Commerce or a Science student. You will have to choose any language, philosophy, psychology, history, geography, etc as you career stream later on.
So, I suggest you that you choose wisely what to do after 12th as that is what is going to shape your further life and career

After completing SSC, you have option to choose different careers. Some students go with arts stream, some with commerce stream and others with science stream.
They are also divided into major categories.
1. Science stream mainly consist of 2 parts -PCM and PCB
Students willing to pursue engineering in graduation choose Physics, chemistry and mathematics as their main subject with computer science or IT as optional.
And students willing to pursue medical in graduation chooses biology as the main subject. They have to choose fisheries as extra subject.
And if student has not yet decided, they can with general stream in Science(PCMB) . The main subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology.
2. The students with commerce stream have these subject paper in class 12th.
You can do Charted Accountancy, Bachelor of Business Administration, Company Secretary, and Industry Oriented Integrated courses after class 12th.
3. The students pursuing career in Arts stream have these subjects as major in class 12th.
You can do Bachelor of Arts, Integrated Law Course, Bachelor of Hotel Management, Bachelor of Fashion Design after class 12th.

See, basically if there are three streams mainly at 10+2 level, science which has PCM. PCB, PCMB combinations, commerce and humanities, now the decision to choose a specific stream at 10+2 or graduation depends largely on your areas of interest, skill, aptitude, and kind of job profile you're looking at to be working in future, say if you're interested in technical field say BE or BTech you can choose PCM at 10+2 level, if you're interested in medicine/healthcare or bio related domain then PCB combination will be great for you, however with PCMB you get the benefits of the both, you can go for humanities if you're interested in law, journalism, fashion designing, with commerce at 10+2 level you can go for professional courses in future such as CA/CS, or integrated management such as BBA+MBA offered by few selective IIMs such as that of Indore/Ranchi/Rohtak/Jammu/Bodhgaya, this is just a general overview I have provided you, choosing a career meticulously is very important and as I said a specific course should be totally based on your interest, skillsets, aptitude, kind of job profile suited for you etc,
