Electrical engineering,It is the field of engineering that has been around since a very long time right. Reaserches continuing in that area.

Traditionally electrical engineering was to do with electronics,power systems,high voltage ,Power systems,power electronics machine, solar grid,etc.

There is a another major area in electrical engineering is micro electronics and VLSL

Plasmonics is the area where metal interfaces can enhance certain properties of light.

Silicon photonics is also the another area,where you know you can just like how you had electronic Integrated circuit,you could have photonic integrated circuit.

As per the research concerned,in that sense if we see,electrical engineering is not a chased subject,where you keep following specific area  and you keep expanding on that,its not like that .

So think on it.

Disciplinary contributions differ widely, as do the media through which research achievements are communicated to other scholars and to the wider society, but the end-product is a statement of some kind: a publication, a conference presentation, a patent, an architectural design or some other result produced to standards and conventions determined by a national and international peer group.

As per above mentioned lines you can analysis that research work will happen always future developments prospective .So you should invented some things or adding extra technology to improving some projects .There are lots of IEEE projects are available in 2020 you can research any of one and add some extra features on that and it will vary by every year .
