Hi,

Aerospace Engineering is one of the fastest growing advanced engineering fields in India. In rest of the world, it is already well established and has plenty of opportunities.

When we talk about India, both government and private sector are involved in aerospace industry. Government organizations being: ISRO, DRDO, NAL, and HAL. ISRO being the largest of them, is, of course, a Space Agency. Getting a job in any of these organizations would require you to pass an entrance exam, followed by an interview. All of them have decent salaries now that 7th Pay commission is active.

In private arena, some of the big names are Boeing, Airbus, GE Aviation, TATA advanced materials limited, Honeywell, GKN Aerospace, TATA advanced systems, Mahindra Aerospace etc. If you are an undergraduate student in Aerospace in an IIT, then some of these countries might come to your campus for placements. I am not sure which ones.

Another career you can choose after aerospace engineering in India is to do research at some of the institutes and prominent research centers in India, and probably pursue a PhD at an IIT and go into academia (A road less travelled, and not recommended).

Abroad (Europe and USA) is full of MS and PhD programs in Aerospace engineering, which is what you have to do before getting a job there. You can’t (at least not easily) get a job directly in USA or Europe after your BTech at an IIT. There are thousands of aerospace companies in USA and Europe. But, you can’t get a job in most of them until you get a permanent residence permit (or a Green card). USA is more strict in this regard than Europe. In some companies you have to have a citizenship to be able to work there.

Apart from this most Indians go for research option in this field, as it doesn’t have restrictions based on nationality. If you dream of working in NASA or ESA, you have to be patient and considerably good in what you do.

This is a more generic view of opportunities in aerospace field (in my opinion).

Hope this helps.

All the best.
