What's the procedure if i want to pursue Merchant Navy as a career as I shall complete my class 12th in science stream?

· Procedure for pursuing a career in merchant navy

The eligibility for joining merchant navy is completing class 12 with the subject math, physics and chemistry. The candidates must be Indian citizens and they must not be married. This is irrespective of the gender. Another requirement is normal vision but glasses with power not exceeding 2.5 might be allowed.

· Process

The admission will be after undertaking an entrance test. After this there will be a screening test and then again, a written main examination. The admission has two levels of testing. A screening test will be there initially. Those who clear it will be qualified for the main written exam. Once the test is cleared there will be a medical examination. Physical fitness is also looked into. Before getting employed the candidates have to go through ship training for making them prepared for the job. It is a short duration course where they will be taught about managing security concerns of voyaging.

After 12th there are many courses that you can take up to pursue a career in merchant navy. These are:

B.Sc. Nautical Science

B.E. Marine Engineering

B.E. Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering

B.E. Petroleum Engineering

B.E. Mechanical Engineering

B.E. Harbor & Ocean Engineering

B.E. Civil Engineering

B.E. Electrical & Electronics Engineering

B.Sc. Marine Catering

Electro Technical Officer Course

For any of these courses the candidates will have to appear for IMUCET or the all india merchant navy entrance exam. The other exams for Marine Engineering are JEE, MERI Entrance Exam, TIMSAT.

To join as an Engineer



BE/B Tech Marine Engineering (4 Years)



To join as a Rating after Class X or XII





Pre Sea GP Rating Course (6 Months)



To join in the catering department after Class X or XII



Maritime Catering Course (6 Months)



BSc in Marine Catering (3 Years)
