Hello Sakthi Grish,

What is SAT and why is it taken?

  • SAT is a standardized test which shows schools your readiness for college by testing you in areas of reading comprehensions, computational capabilities and expressional clarity.
  • Most of the colleges in USA, New Zealand, UK, Canada and Australia widely accept SAT scores in order to get admissions in undergraduate courses.
  • The SAT has 10 sections - first is an essay, then two reading, two math, one writing and one experimental section all these are of 25 minutes each, this is then followed by a 20 minutes reading section, a 20 minutes math sections, and a 10 minute writing section.
  • The SAT score is given between the range of 400 to 1600. The average score falls somewhere around 1000, however to get one of the top universities you will need to get a score above 1300.
  • The best time to take the SAT is in your 11th grade or the start of your 12th grade. This will give you enough time to improve your score.
  • This score is valid for 5 years.

  • SAT subjects cover a basic of five areas like English, history, language, mathematics and science. It tests you in a total of 20 subjects.
  • The examination tests you on the knowledge of the subjects on a high school level.
  • You can take upto three subjects on a single day.
  • All 20 tests are not offered on the very same date.
  • SAT and SAT Subject Test cannot be taken on the same day.

Other examination necessary for admissions abroad are:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for countries like USA and Canada.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for countries like UK, Australia and New Zealand.

The scores of TOEFL and IELTS are valid for two years. They test your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the English language.

All the best!

I hope this helps!
