Understand the syllabus by going through past years papers and official guidelines. CAT can be segmented into four broad parts-
Quantitative Ability
Data Interpretation
Logical Reasoning
Verbal Ability
The concepts used in this examination are broadly of class 10 level. However, the questions are little bit tricky to solve and require good amount of logical thinking. Butit can be developed by practice.
It totally depend upon your choice. Take a 2 year program due to dynamism of cat exam.it will help you in your cause.

It usually takes a one year program in an coaching institute to prepare for CAT. Some institutes have two year programs as well and you can join those as well. Apart from these you can Start self preparation by reading a wide range of subjects - politics, science, economics, philosophy, culture - so that you get comfortable with these topics. To start with you can read books by these authors: Sidney Sheldon, Jeffrey Archer, John Grisham, Agatha Christie, Mario Puzo, Salman Rushdie, Aravind Adiga and many others. You can also start with newspapers including TOI, ET, Indian Express, The Hindu, HT etc.
You can also start by solving reference books for Quantitative Aptitude preparation.

Since you are in the first year you can devote a good amount of time in reading which is very important for CAT.
You can start preparing basics for Quant and VARC whenever you want as it will be helpful during your further preparation.
If you have the plan to pursue MBA degree directly after your graduation, then you will need to give various MBA exams when you are in the final year of your graduation i.e. in your 7th semester (assuming your graduation is of a 4-year programme).
So, the best time to join coaching for CAT preparation is in starting off your 3rd year. This way you will get enough time to study very well for a whole year and then for a few months when you will be entering into your final year you can practice test series and various mock test rigorously. To get a very high percentile in CAT or any other MBA exam giving lots and lots of mock test is very very important.
As you are in the 1st year right now, so until that time you can work on improving your English by reading lots of good novels written by good authors like Charles Dickens, Agatha Christie, Sydney Sheldon etc. This will help you in improving your English Literature. For improving your vocabulary you should start memorizing 3 words daily with their meaning and correct pronunciation. You should start using these words in your daily life so that you can memorize them in a better way. For Reading Comprehension section you should start reading different passages in different newspaper, magazines etc. and understand the thought process of the author. You need to see what actually he wants to convey through his passage, to who is he targeting and his way of communication. This will help you in solving the maximum questions asked below the passage.
Along with this you can also purchase a book for quantitative ability by Arun Sharma and practice questions whenever you have free time so this will help you in making your basics very strong.
