India's first unmanned Earth satellite was named Aryabhata. It has the name of a well-known Indian mathematician and astronomer from the fifth century CE. The satellite was built at Peenya, close to Bangalore, but on April 19, 1975, a Russian-made rocket launched it from within the Soviet Union. Aryabhata, which weighed 794 pounds (360 kg), was outfitted with instruments to monitor gamma and neutron radiation from the Sun, investigate Earth's ionosphere, and conduct X-ray astronomy research. The satellite's electrical power supply failed on the fifth day of orbit, forcing the scientific equipment to be turned off. Nonetheless, throughout the course of the five days of operation, valuable data was gathered.
