Candidate should start reading newspaper from day 1 to cover all essential news. You don't have to read whole newspaper .You have to focus only on main news. Your way of reading newspaper should be such that you cover important news in limited period of time. You should maintain consistency in reading newspaper so that you don't miss any important information.
You should focus on these parts of newspaper:
New and important bills in parliament.
New policies and schemes announced by government.
Debates in parliament.
News related to constitution and their amendment .
News related to election .
Important supreme / High Court
News related to scientific development.
News related to resources of nation.
Changes and policies introduced in banking sector.
Business related news.
Change in GDP.
Visits of prime Minister in foreign country .
Policies introduced by foreign nations and their impact on country.
Treaties signed by different country.
Role of international organizations like WHO,UN ,IMF etc.
News related to environment.
You should avoid reading these news:
All 'masala news'
Regional news
Who' won 'and 'defeat' in election
Entertainment news.
Political news of one person blaming other.

Now if you take from a UPSC examination perspective, you must read the news papers of the whole year before the examination. For example, if you are trying to attempt for UPSC 2023 then you should keep in practice about studying the newspaper from the 2022 January to 2022 December at least. You should start 6 months before prelims.
For Prelims -
- Facts which could be asked like satellites, missiles, space projects, GI tags etc
- Previous year papers should be analysed and by this one could understand which Facts or Current affairs could be asked.
For Mains -
- Editorials - to know how to write a balanced answer substantiated with facts and examples.
- Government schemes, International news, Any important judgments , Public debate issues etc
- Syllabus and Last year papers helps one to select which news is important for Mains.
- One should skip political news.
Read a newspaper and then read the daily current affairs and editorial given on websites like I-sights etc to know which news one missed. This way one could understand which news one has to read and one could align oneself with UPSC.
