B.Tech in Pharmaceutical Technology degree concentrates upon the field of medicines, such as their preparation, dosages, effects etc. The course covers not only the preparation of such items but also the construction and requirements of the industrial units in which medicines are developed and produced. It is, therefore, a field of vital importance to the society and has been gaining popularity in recent years.

To be eligible for the Bachelor of Technology in Pharmaceutical Technology course, candidates must have pass their qualifying examination (CBSE/ISC/State Board or its equivalent) in the Science stream. Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics are compulsory subjects for this course. It is offered in various premier institutions across the country, such as Anna University, and admission is generally done on the basis of entrance examinations.

On successful completion of this 8 semester, 4-year programme, the students will be eligible for jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, as well as for higher education (ME/MTech) in the same field. Starting salaries can be expected in the range of Rs. 25,000, with high scope for an increase with industrial experience.

The selection process for the Bachelor of Technology programme in Pharmaceutical Technology is done through the entrance examination. Anna University is one of the only institutions in the country who offer this programme, therefore the generally acceptable examination is the TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission) test, which is conducted by the university itself annually.

Applications are usually available on the online portal of the institution at the start of May, for a period of around three weeks. Candidates not from Tamil Nadu State must provide a nativity certificate in order to be eligible to write the TNEA examination. Selection for admission for eligible candidates depends primarily on the result of this test, though past academic performance may play a role in final selection.

The result of the entrance examination is posted in the month of July, and the counseling process begins immediately after. Final selection of candidates for admission happens in this phase. Reservation is applicable as per the Government of India rules.

Given that it is an extremely rare course in the country, there is no provision for lateral entry with this course. It has a heavy work load and is a course with full time study, thereby making distance education improbable. All candidates are offered admission based on their performance in the selection process, and there is no other method of gaining admission, i.e. no direct admission offers are given.
