In 1756, Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah was annoyed with the unfair trade practices of the British. He was also infuriated by the construction of Fort William without his permission. In retaliation to this, he seized Fort William in Calcutta and imprisoned 146 Europeans in a small, poorly ventilated room where 123 of them died because of suffocation. This event is known as the Black Hole tragedy.
