Fruits can be artificially ripened in certain countries by using Ethylene gas (C 2 H 2 ). Similar to the natural ripening agent Ethylene (C 2 H 4 ), Calcium carbide produces Acetylene gas (C 2 H 2 ) when it comes into contact with moisture. Ripening is sped up by Acetylene.
