Psychiatry is a specialization within a physician’s Post-graduate degree which is also known as Doctor of Medicine, MD. Psychiatry is one of the most profitable professions of this era. It deals with the mental, emotional & behavioral disorders in a human being. Many times mental & psychosomatic issues or problems arise in patients with various medical, surgical, and gynecological cases.

Psychiatrists are the professionals who look after or treat patients with mental problems, like depression and schizophrenia, and so on. Treatments by the professional are made on the basis of counselings, therapies, and then on the basis of medicines.
To become a professional psychiatrist, one should attend or join the medical colleges first and receive an MBBS degree. After that one should have an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degree. One could also pursue a Diploma in Psychiatric Medicine(DPM) from a recognized educational institute to be qualified as a psychiatrist. One can also take admission in M.D (psychiatry) after completing graduation or post-graduation in psychology.
Eligibility required:-
Doctors who have completed the MBBS program of study are eligible to do a specialization in Psychiatry. There are two ways such as one may either do an M.D. or Post-graduation in Psychiatry or a Diploma in Psychiatry (DPM). M.D the course is of three years while the diploma course is of two years’ duration.
Apart from the MD and DPM, there is another option for study. The National Board of Examination organizes or conducts a program called the Diploma of National Board Exam also known as DNB. The DNB is considered to be equal to an MD degree.
The curriculum for the MD program in Psychiatry includes psychology, physiology, anatomy, and biochemistry of the brain, neurosurgery & neurology. There are several special aspects of psychology such as psychiatry, social psychiatry, community psychiatry, child psychiatry, preventive psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry that are also taught under this program; this course also has facilities of practical training at mental hospitals.
First, psychiatrists begin with a diagnosis after that they follow it up with treatments, be it counseling, medication, psychotherapy, or electrotherapy. They also work with other occupational therapists and social workers for the rehabilitation of patients. Through different kinds of counseling programs, psychotherapies, and if necessary through the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) or tranquilizers, psychiatrists work on their patients. Whenever they find it necessary they work on desensitizing patients, mainly through the use of the hypnosis process. In today's fast-paced life, psychiatrists are in great demand. The increasing mental tensions and stress from modern lifestyle are very common among all people. And especially in these cases, the role of psychiatrists becomes vital.
They can work at both government & private hospitals, health institutes, clinics, nursing homes, poly clinics, research centers and so on. Psychiatrists also can start private practice at home or by opening their clinics. The salary of a psychiatrist may vary from one institution to another. Governmental institutions consider a psychiatrist as equal to any other specialists and offer same amount of salary. However, the earnings are more in private practice as compared to the amount that a person working at any government hospital or clinic.
