You get enough time to prepare for UPSC CSE in any course if you stay consistent. however if you are super sure about pursuing UPSC CSE it is advised to take ARTS (Humanities) in your 10+2 or graduation which are actually interrelated subjects to Civil Services but we have seen students from other fields crack it too, majority of which are engineers, so yeah, being a humanities or non humanities student is making less difference now. Moreover if you feel like you don't have enough preparations before your exams after completing your graduation , you can take a year off and prepare with all of your body, mind and soul. Good Luck!

Graduation scorecard and involvements, experiences, internships significantly influence your Profile later in Interviews, hence I personally dont believe you should dive into UPSC CSE Preparation seriously during Graduation. Read the NCERTs and make a bit of Daily Newspaper Reading and getting updated with Current Affairs throughout your Graduation Years. Once you graduate, you may start preparation seriously for a year maybe with a One Year Coaching, Offline/Online and Test Series, either fulltime preparation or partially besides working, followed by appearing for Prelims the following year. This would be a strong strategy for First Attempt.
Hello,
The UPSC civil services exam is considered one of the toughest exams in the country. And, because of this, a lot of people recommend studying for about 15 hours per day during the IAS exam preparation time.
In graduation you can opt for subjects like bachelor in arts, B.A Political science, B.A History etc. so that you don't have much burden on yourself plus these subjects will help you in examination as well. Be thorough with the UPSC syllabus. Go through the previous year UPSC CSE question papers. This should give you the right direction.
It is always advisable to NOT waste time on back-up plans in the 1st attempt itself. You have to be absolutely desperate about UPSC, and not dedicate energy to other exams. If at all necessary, take up other options once Mains is over.First of all you start with NCERTs and read The Hindu Newspaper everyday. Clear your basics needed for UPSC Exam. Work on your vocabulary if it is not so strong. Improve your communication skills & most importantly also focus on your other subjects.
Hope this helps!!
