If you want to become a scientist then you have go for the science subjects such as BSc/BS program on the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and interdisciplinary subjects such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Zoology etc. After a BSc/BS you need to go for a Masters and a PhD either separately or you can go for the institutes such as IIT's, IISc's,IISER, IACS, TIFR etc.

So with a PhD you can call yourself as a legitimate scientist.
