Dear aspirant,
It really depends on you what you want to choose as these are core branches . If you are good with chemistry then I would suggest you to take up chemical engineering branch but if you are good with mathematics and physics then do take up mechanical engineering branch.
So, one can't say that which branch is good. Both these are core branches. But yes, if placements are considered and in an average college mechanical has better placements compared to chemical candidates.
For example, I am now in nit jamshedpur in mechanical branch and its core branches is comparable to the top nits and it's median package for mechanical currently stays between 7-7.5L but for metallurgy its a bit less and usually stays between 6L.
