If you are thinking to get into Defence after engineering then you may only get to do Technical job. After Engineering DRDO (DEFENCE RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF INDIA) is the best option for you. DRDO highly considers Mechanical Engineering students for work. Also you can enter DRDO and other Defence departments through Mechanical, Electronics & Communication and Computer Science field but still Mechanical is highly approached.

So, you can apply for Mechanical Engineering but be careful with your studies. Also you must decide yourself that which of the three above mentioned branches is interesting for you, go for that. Don't worry about the scope, it is good in all the above three branches.

You can opt any engineering field it will not matter a lot.

Because to get into defence you need to crack exam and than SSB.

Exam is easy because you are a engineering student ( you should have some basic general knowledge also).

And after that all about ssb in which you need  your personality ; skills and soft skills and your speaking skills And these skills can be improved in any branch by daily practicing and involving these in your daily life .
