hello there!

there are many habits and qualities that should be maintained. They vary by format: stage, television, film, voice, etc., but there are some common factors.

  • You must be able to read, well and fluidly. I've heard of actors who have some form of dyslexia, and I have no idea how they manage to work in spite of it; my hat is off to them.
  • You should be comfortable with movement, to some degree. I dance like a drunken hippo, but I can improvise perfectly acceptable blocking around my fellow actors in a scene. If you're acting on camera, you must be able to "hit your mark." That means moving to the place which is optimal for the camera operator who is shooting you, often indicated by nothing more than a small piece of colored tape on the floor.
  • You must have good diction. It doesn't matter what you're saying if no one can understand you. Also, you should, ideally, be free of regional dialects. I was born and raised in Oklahoma, and had to get rid of my natural regionalisms so I could play a wide variety of people. If you can mimic other people's dialects, so much the better. The ability to sing will also come in handy.
  • You must have the ability to memorize lines. The difficulty of this varies by type of work, but most acting requires it to some degree. I've performed a one-man show which required me to memorize about 75 minutes of dialogue (I say "dialogue," as opposed to "monologue," because I was portraying different characters). TV and film also require you to memorize, but for briefer stretches at a time. Voice work usually involves reading directly from a script.

This is a very cursory list; just the basics. There are also skills that, while not absolutely required, go a long way towards facilitating a career. They include being able to get along well with others, knowing how to be a self-employed business person, and knowing how to survive on minimal resources during lean times of little or no employment.
I hope I've helped.

goodluck!
