Hello,

I can't say much about Guwahati neither will I present a fake or distorted picture of BHU.

So cons of going for civil@BHU:

Faculty shortage - All subdisciplines except structural are facing faculty shortage. The transportation engineering subdiscipline at IIT-B has almost the same number of proffs as the whole department of civil engineering.

No collaborations - IIT(BHU) to my knowledge has very few or no collaborations with foreign universities. This really affects your chances for a foreign internship if you really interested in one.

IT(BHU) culture - A considerable amount of the teaching and non teaching staff, equipment, protocols are from the pre-IIT days. So you might face trouble getting around some of them.

Conservative attitude - Some of the older faculty members are quite conservative. They don't see a lot value in cross domain projects. Moreover the system of cross branch electives was non existent till 2014.

The department office - this is more of a personal grudge. The department office is seriously inefficient. It took me six months to get my reimbursement for my trip to conference in which they lost my form twice. Almost every student has faced difficulties in dealing with the department office staff. (But this might be a non issue while college selection).

Now the pros of civil@BHU:

Owing to its early establishment you will have a large pool of alumni. I mean there are lot of them from the days when civil was the real deal in the engineering.

The department and the college is working day and night to fill the faculty shortage. I have myself witnessed at least two new faculty members in the department in my final year. Trust me faculty recruitment is a time taking process as they have to ensure the quality of the teaching staff.

The newer faculty members are quite liberal. My project guide had joined the institute in 2014. I worked with him to code pedestrian evacuation simulators for buildings and trains. This sure does appear blasphemous to some of the older faculty. He even encouraged me to present my work at a conference for transportation engineering.

If you manage to get it then a letter of recommendation from few of the senior faculty members can fetch you an admission to almost any top class graduate program. I guess that almost the same for all IITs and getting an letter of recommendation from such senior professors is not that easy. You really have to prove your worth.

The course load is not easy but it is certainly not that heavy too. You can easily pursue your non academic or professional goals. Moreover I guess that Varanasi is not as remote as Guwahati, this gives you access to a city full of coaching institutes for IAS/CAT if you are into them.

IIT Guwahati Civil Would be better choice for you. As far as placement is concerned at IIT(BHU) you might get equivalent or even better jobs. But as far as facilities and other college activities are concerned IIT Guwahati is at better place than IIT(B.H.U).

So, i prefer you to go for IIT Guwahati because placements are very important fir a student to start his/her career.

I hope this would help you. For further queries please feel free to write me down in the comment box.
