IIIT (Indian Institute of Information Technology):
The IIITs are of two types:
Set-up, Funded and Managed by Ministry of Human Resource Development.
Setup on Public Private Partnership (PPP), funded by Central Government, State Governments and Industry Partners in the ratio 50:35:15.
The type 'a' college includes 4 colleges. These are also Institute of National Importance. These are somewhat old and well established.
The type 'b' includes 20 colleges. The industry partners play a vital role in determining their syllabus and curriculum, which is advantage for them. As per the new IIIT Bill, these institutes are also Institute of National Importance.
This college has a tag name 'Indian' and a brand name IIIT. In this college, the admission is base on the All India Quota, thus, its not like NITs where students having low rank get admission due to state quota.
Like IITs, they also get a brand name 'Indian', instead of the 'National' tag.
IIITs offer admissions only in the branches like CSE, ECE, IT, etc., which are core branches in the field of Information Technology. These branches offer a very high packages. This is the reason for the higher average salary of IIITs than NITs.
The best IIITs includes IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Trichy, IIITDM Kanchipuram, etc.
There are 24 IIITs in all.
NIT (National Institute of Technology):
These colleges were earlier RECs who later were changed to National Institute of Technology. These colleges are also Institute of National Importance. A few colleges are somewhat old and well established.
For the admission to this college, 50% is reserved for the students of state quota and the other 50% to the other state quota. So, if you are going to join an NIT, its like similar that you are joining a college which is just similar and better than the state colleges.
The top engineering colleges are IITs, i.e., Indian Institute of Technology, which got a brand name 'Indian'. NITs have 'National' tag instead.
The NITs offer admission in almost all fields and branches, which is not in available in IIITs.
The best NITs lies in the south, i.e., NIT Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Calicut. The other top NITs include NIT Allahabad, Jaipur, Bhopal, Nagpur, Kurukshetra, Durgapur, etc.
There are 31 NITs in total.
Thus, in my view, IIITs can be considered better than the NITs.
Hi Degapudi Hem Satvik Reddy !
We cannot compare IIITs and NITs . So, I suggest you to see the NIRF rankings of the colleges to know which will be better for you to choose in order to pursue Bachelor of Technology . Here is the link provided :-

Hello Degapudi,
I would like to say that, in any institute you may study, because every institutes have their own way of teaching, this is my view about institutes but if you want to know that which is better, then you should ask the individuals who is or who was studying in that institute.
You should focus on yourself and your study.
Thanks for query on this platform, you may visit again for further queries.
All the best.
Hi aspirant
NITs are best for B.tech in comparision to IIITs .If you are unable to get NITs then only go for IIITs .There are less number of seats in IIITs also in terms of placement you will get a broader scope at NITs.
But if you are intrested in coding then IIIT Hyderabad is far better. You can go for IIIT Hyderabad. Also Hyderabad is a city which can provide you offcampus at good companies.
Hope this was helpful.
hii reddy
IITs are better. IIIT is also good but when compared to IITs it will have low rank. Entry to IIT is through the iit-jee, while forIIIT it is done through AIEEE. Both are top institutes to pursue engineering education but IIT should be preferred first than IIIT.
Hope this helps
