The selection of branch completely depends upon your interest. I can help you in that in various perspective-
1) job opportunities- definitely job opportunities in India are more in electronics because you can even jump to IT sector any time easily from ECE but from mech it is little difficult.
2) If u r interested in chips, circuits, transistor working, switches , analogue signals, networks, towers, bjt , MOSFETs, VLSI, then you should go for ECE. And make career in it by giving your 100% to it.
3) If u r interested in thermodynamics, heat engines, pumps, hydraulic, energy resources, fuels types for future and related research then go for mechanical, designing cad labs etc
4) Think wisely no branch is good or bad , it's your interest towards it and if are doing it from good college then no tension for placement also

Both streams are good and have a wide range of scopes. And it completely depends upon that in which field do you will to go ? If you like machines then mechanical is good for you and if you want to work with the latest advancements in technology then go for Electronics.
