Hey Dhanush
As far as India is concerned you should choose anaesthesia as with this subject you will be needed in OT, ICU, Emergency department, pediatric, Acute /chronic pain management, Neuro, Cardiac , obstetrics, obesity etc but with emergency medicine you will be restricted to only the emergency department. However with emergency medicine you will be able to save the lives of patients at their most crucial times. Emergency Medicine is a growing field in India. Moreover unlike anaesthesia you wont be called by the hospital at any time(you will have a fixed schedule). You wont get the chance to open your own clinic though and recent scenarios of violence against doctors is a thing to keep in mmind as you might be the first point of contact with patients and their families incase something goes wrong.
Hello,
No doubt, both the courses are good, but, in Anesthesia, you need to deal with one patient at a time, whereas in Emergency Medicine, you are juggling between several patients.
You might struggle to find enjoyment in the more “primary care” side of EM– which unfortunately might seem like entirely too much of time. The working days might be too long for you.
Meanwhile, you can enjoy the skill set that comes with Anesthesia training, and you won't find much problem like in EM.
Also, Emergency Medicine field does not have much scope in India, whereas Anesthesia is a quite versatile field. You can practice core Anesthesiology in OTs, manage ICUs, and you can also work in the casualty or Emergency Medicine department. While, Emergency medicine means you will be stuck to the Emergency department. You won't have any other choice.
So, in my opinion, Anesthesia is a better choice than Emergency Medicine.
Hope this helps!
