which is better field msc Biotechnology msc microbiology
Hello devjot,
The better option
All the two fields has a very wide career, but it is totally depends on your interest,
just choose according to your choice. But there are vast employment opportunities
for the students of Biochemistry as it is growing very vast now a days and Biotechnology as they can be absorbed in a number of Research Institutions , Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology, National Botanical Institute Agricultural Research Institute, National Institute of Immunology etc., can work as Scientists, research
officers, research associates, chemical examiners...etc.,
Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development and Panacea Biotech are the major research institutes which offer research jobs for M.sc degree holders in Microbiology.
Microbiology is about to blow up with the human micro-biome project. There will be an expansion of micro jobs in health , environmental (farming, bio-remediation, ocean health), as well as the current health and food possibilities (pathogens, bio-fuels, virology, food testing, pro-biotics , fermenting, brewing). So I think there is also a growth potential there. Most o microbiology ends up being like gardening - you have to know how stuff grows, and there are lots of tests to find out what you are growing. In practice, working in a micro lab can be pretty repetitive.
ALL the fields are good and have a bright future ,but hunt for your interest subject and in which field you want to grow.
hope this will clear your mindset .
Hello Divjyot!
Microbiology is a very extensive field, biotechnology being a part of it. Biotechnology includes animal biotech, plant biotech, and microbial biotech. And all these disciplines are branches of microbiology. In short, biotechnology depends on microbiology.
If you are interested in Biotechnology mainly then my suggestion would be to study Biotech as a special paper in MSc Microbiology. Or take up BTech Biotech if you want more job opportunities. This is because Biotechnology is a specific part of Microbiology and it narrows down your job scope.
Otherwise, there is no comparison between both! Because both microbiology and biotechnology have found their expansion into epidemiology(i.e study of diseases). If you study microbiology then you ultimately find job prospects and research opportunities in biotechnology. Foreign universities like Wisconsin University and Purdue University is considered best for pursuing Ph.D in Microbiology and Biotechnology. In India, the IISERs, NISER and IACS lead in the research competition. Choose good universities to study these disciplines if you want to make the best out of it.

However, job prospects in both fields are similar and opportunities only occur after you pursue an MS degree and then Ph.D. You will have immense opportunities in abroad in the R&D sector. In India, the research in both the fields is still limited and the job opportunities are not vast unless you complete your Ph.D.
Hope this helps:)
