Hello Habibul Islam,
Both IITs and IIST are better than most of the engineering colleges in the country, including a majority of NITs. IIST being a much younger institute compared to the more prestigious older IITs (M, B, D, K and Kgp), the facilities provided to the institute including the labs and funding is either at par or slightly better than the IITs. A lot of excellent research is carried out at IIST, most of which is headed by an able, responsible and highly approachable group of faculty.
Thus, when it comes to the quality of education, facilities and the research environment, IIST can be said to be as good as an IIT. However, where it falls behind is in two key areas:
The area of interest - IIST caters to a very narrow field of space technology. The various branches are structured keeping this fact in mind and the subjects are designed for successful application in this domain. IITs teach engineering in general and thus provides a more comprehensive knowledge of each branch and the glut of opportunities that each offer.
What next? - The placement opportunities offered by IITs, simply put, are enormous. There is no denying that fact. However, the same cannot be said about IIST. It being a rather newer institute, few companies come for placement and that too is limited due to point 1 above. It is indeed true that ISRO absorbs a lot of students after undergraduate studies, but the lack of good job opportunities does stifle many a hope.
Thanku.
