there is no such restriction for any stream. In a particular year, a particular branch GATE exam could be set difficult and in the next year that might be damn easy!
The setting of the GATE exam all depend on the institute that has the turn to set-up the paper. The IITs and IISC, Banglore have their turns once for setting up the exam and the cycle is repeated in every 8 years (most probably). Their are certain so called favorite subjects of each college for which they are believed to set a high difficulty level. So, for your convenience you need to check which IIT is going to set the paper and what are its favorite subjects and choose the branch that would give you an easiness to crack GATE.
This is not a 100% possible fortune. You never know when your luck leaves you on an easy going path! ;)
What to actually do?
Select a branch you have interest in! Study hard for that particular GATE exam and come out with flying colors!
