IITs, IIITs, NITs and then few private Universities like Amrita, Manipal, VIT, SRM, BITS Pilani, etc. which have really come up and have proved and have established legacy for themselves. All these colleges are really good to study from. As per your question, I am assuming that you are looking at a local college. So, I would suggest that there are some Universities which specialize in some courses. For example, textile engineering is at NIFT. So, at the local level, the criteria is always different. What I would have done if I were you, I would make a list of top 10 or top 50 universities around the country which I can join if I get a seat in them in a branch of my priority. If I don't get that, I come down to the local level and pick up the top 5 colleges at the local level. So, if you are in Hyderabad, you pick top 5 colleges in Hyderabad and see is there a possibility that you can get a stream of your choice in these 5 colleges in Hyderabad. So, the priority should be that at national level, you mark 50 colleges because at All India level, you actually have IITs, NITs, IIITs and few other good Universities and then at a local level you need to have a list of about 5 to 10 of them and between then you should choose which is the college which is going to give you the branch of your choice. Because once you get into a good college with good quality infrastructure, faculty, etc. then there are very little chances that you get wrong in your career path.
