One-year LLM programme was introduced in India by UGC in January 2013 which recommended to set up a Centre for Post Graduate Legal Studies (CPGLS) in the prescribed manner to offer the 1-year LLM programme.
It started at select law schools in 2013–14. In the last 3 years, many law schools, mostly National Law Universities, leading private law schools/universities and some of the central/state universities have introduced one-year LLM programmes in India.
The one year LL.M. programme shall have 24 credits with three mandatory courses of 3 credits each (making a total of nine credits), six optional courses of 2 credits each (making a total of 12 credits) and a dissertation of 3 credits. University may increase credit for dissertation up to 5 credits and decide how teaching and examinations have to be organized, grades determined and what specializations to be offered.
