The spinal canal in the lower back narrows due to lumbar spinal stenosis. By removing the bony spurs and the vertebral bone walls, surgeons undertake laminectomy surgery to cure spinal stenosis. A procedure called foraminotomy enlarges the space surrounding one of the compressed spinal nerves. The removal of damaged vertebrae and intervertebral discs that are crushing the spinal cord and spinal nerves is known as a corpectomy.
