The selective permeability of cell membranes is a key property. Cell membranes are made up of a lipid bilayer with proteins embedded in them. This structure enables them to regulate the flow of chemicals and ions into and out of the cell. Water normally travels across a cell membrane by osmosis, which includes water moving from areas of greater concentration to areas of lower concentration rather than from lower to higher concentration.
