C. Rajagopalachari was an Indian politician, freedom fighter and Madras-born member of the Constituent Assembly. He was an Indian National Congress prominent leader. He served as Free India's first and last Indian Governor-General. He was the first to receive Bharat Ratna in 1954. For his effort retelling the Ramayana as Chakravarti Thirumagan, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for the Tamil language.
