Secondary growth occurs in dicotyledonous plants (dicots) and some gymnosperms, whereas most monocotyledonous plants (monocots) have little or no secondary development. The tissues involved in secondary growth are of two categories. The vascular cambium is a thin layer of meristematic tissue present in the stems and roots of woody plants between the primary xylem and primary phloem. Cork cambium (Phellogen) is another meristematic tissue found in the outer layers of roots.
