This depends on your interest in the course first of all as both are among the reputed colleges. Though NIT is a tag in itself, Jadavpur University is actually better even in rankings and placements. Moreover IT stream has more scope than Mechanical anyway since you have opportunities in the countless software companies in the world.

Mechanical at NIT
The placements are good. Moreover, it is increasing every successive year. The placements, this year, are better than the placements last year. This year, already more than 80% of the students have been placed in the mechanical engineering branch in good companies and PSU's.
IT at Jadavpur University
The highest salary was 27 lakhs per annum, the lowest was 3.2 lakhs per annum and the average was around 12 lakhs per annum. Many reputed companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, Goldman Sachs and Adobe were part of our placement drive. They mostly offered software developer or analyst job profile for the recruits.
More than one-third of the pre-final year students got internships from college. The highest stipend offered was 40,000 per month, the lowest was 5,000 per month and the average would be somewhere around 30,000 per month.
