After Alivardi Khan passed away in 1756, Siraj ud-Daulah assumed the role of Nawab of Bengal. He was Bengal's last independent Nawab. Bengal's first Nawab was Murshid Quli Khan. The first Nawab of Bengal to be influenced by the British was Mir Jafar. From 1740 until 1756, Alivardi Khan ruled Bengal as the Nawab.
