Malaviya participated in the establishment of the Hindu Mahasabha in 1906 and was one of its early leaders. The most prominent INC leader at the time was Madan Mohan Malviya. Most notably, he is credited with founding Varanasi's Banaras Hindu University (B.H.U.) in 1916. He was given the title "Mahamana" by Rabindra Nath Tagore, and the title "Karmayogi" by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the second President of India.
