Gopinath Bordoloi (1890-1950)was the first chief minister of Assam post independence (1947)and also leading freedom fighter of Indian freedom struggle.He was a follower of Gandhian principle of non violence as a political tool.In the pre indipendence era there was a post of prime minister of Assam created under Government of India Act 1935 Syed Muhammad Saadulla (1885-1955)was the prime Minister of Assam in British India elected office on 1st April 1937.

The first chief minister of Assam was Shri Gopinath Bordoloi from the Indian National Congress party. He was sworn into the office in the year 1946,11 February. He remained in the office for 1638 days uptil 6 August 1950 after which the next prime minister was Hajo

At present, the chief minister of Assam is Sarbananda Sonowal since the date 24th of May , 2016.
