India participated in hockey for the first time in Amsterdam Olympics in 1928.He was captain when team clinch gold in the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. He became president of Adivasi Mahasabha in 1939.

In the year 1948, Independent India won its first Olympic Gold Medal by defeating Britain in the 1948 London Olympics. India won its first medal in Field Hockey. India won first-ever Olympic medal in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in hockey when India was a part of British India.

Indian team had won six consecutive gold medels in Olympic Games( 1928,1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956). India also won gold in olympic in 1964 and 1980.
