Pulakeshin II, the Chalukya king of Vatapi (modern Badami in Karnataka), was the contemporaneous South Indian ruler of Harshavardhana. Pulakeshin II was a strong and ambitious emperor who expanded the Chalukya Empire to include the majority of the Deccan Plateau. He was also a superb military strategist, and in 618 CE, he beat Harshavardhana in battle. In 642 CE, Pulakeshin II was defeated by the Pallava ruler Narasimhavarman II.
