To provide a possible reason why there have been no great women writers, Woolf tells her audience that for the purpose of her speech, she will invent an Elizabethan woman, Shakespeare's sister no less, whose “genius was for fiction and lusted to feed abundantly upon the lives of men and women and the study of their problems much more.
